Drawing the line:
Having problems with boisterous classes?
I find it's useful to define boundaries as soon as possible.
My second class for 2nd and 3rd grades:
I introduce the topic as a listening exercise using the song 'I walk the line' by Johnny Cash (a gap-fill using the lyrics). The song is slow and the words simple and clear. It's easy to explain the meaning of walking the line in the context of the song. Then extend to the classroom context. Introduce related expressions - 'crossing the line', 'draw the line'.
They get the idea quickly. You can use these expressions in class. Next, explain the consequences: 'Crossing the line' - Student gets a 'yellow card'. 3 yellow cards = 1 'red card'. A red card = Get out. 3 red cards = See the vice-principal and a letter from him/her to the parents. (First I cleared the system withe vice-principal.)
Now, everybody knows the boundaries and it was a fun class!
